A General Maintenance Guide for Your Treadmill

If you are new to treadmill maintenance, don’t worry. Treadmills are simple to take care of, although they do require some responsibility, and it is definitely important to maintain the machine as it grows older, so that it does not lose its functionality. You will have to pay attention to the condition of the treadmill every month, and open it up to service is every six months to one year, depending on how much you use it.

If you are wondering whether to hire a professional to do the process, this is completely up to you. Normally, you just need to clean the treadmill with a cleaning rag every now and then. When servicing and lubrication is needed, you can either hire a servicer or buy a treadmill lubricant and do it yourself at home. The process doesn’t make more than half an hour and is fairly easy once you understand it in detail. Depending on the type of your treadmill, it might even come with a treadmill belt lubricant, so that you don’t have to invest time and effort in figuring out which one to buy. If it doesn’t, however, your best bet would be to go through the manual to see which kind of lubricant you need to buy.

When buying the treadmill lubricant, find one that is easiest to handle and will last a long time. Every six months or so, you will need to apply this treadmill under the belt, and then walk on it to spread it around. This will reduce friction under the belt and keep it running smooth.

In addition to lubrication, here are a few other things you will need to take care of.

Maintenance of your treadmill with treadmill lubricant

To make sure that your machine stays in its best shape, it is a great idea to buy a maintenance kit and to store it away till you need it. This will include a treadmill lubricant, a belt cleaner and replacement keys.

Since the machine is used for exercise, it will suffer from a buildup of sweat, which can damage the electrical parts. Not to mention, it can also be unhygienic. To avoid this, use a soft cloth to clean the surface of the machine after every use. Avoid spraying water or cleaner onto the surface or consoles directly; if you must use a cleaning product, apply it on your cleaning rag.

To ensure that the belt does not deteriorate, a good idea is to keep a pair of ‘indoor workout shoes’. The dirt and grime from your regular shoes can damage the belt quite quickly, and also requires cleaning after every use. You can avoid this simply by not wearing your treadmill shoes outdoors, and the belt will automatically stay clean.

Another thing you need to keep an eye out for is the hardware. Since the machine vibrates and moves, this can loosen the hardware. This can cause noise or excessive vibration, so make sure you keep an eye on the screws. However, don’t treat these like regular screws, since they can be overtightened and they cannot be handled with regular tools! Always refer to your user manual.

A good treadmill should not cause any problems for several years if these basic things are taken care of.
